1. Enhancing Productivity in PCB Assembly through Low-Cost Automation: A Kaizen-Driven Case Study

    In the highly competitive global electronics sector, manufacturing productivity is paramount. Manual processes within otherwise automated assembly lines frequently become critical bottlenecks, constraining throughput and hindering growth. This research presents a case study of a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) assembly facility in Thailand that faced a significant capacity shortfall. The primary objective is to analyze the implementation and impact of a Kaizen-driven, low-cost automation (LCA) solution designed to resolve a specific manual bottleneck in an adhesive application process. The methodology combines a detailed analysis of the industrial case study with established theoretical frameworks of lean manufacturing, including the Toyota Production System (TPS), time study, and the ECRS (Eliminate, Combine, Rearrange, Simplify) principles. The intervention, executed through three iterative Kaizen cycles, involved developing a custom automated dispensing machine using repurposed, on-site assets. The results demonstrate a profound improvement in operational performance: the bottleneck process cycle time was reduced by 73.6%, from 11 minutes 53 seconds to 3 minutes 8 seconds per unit. This directly enabled an increase in total production capacity to 245 units per week, exceeding the demand target and yielding an estimated annual cost saving of 98,700 THB. This study's principal contribution is its empirical demonstration of how a culture of continuous improvement, coupled with creative problem-solving, can leverage existing resources to achieve significant productivity gains without substantial capital investment, offering a viable and practical model for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and other resource-constrained manufacturers.

  2. Supply Chains in Style: A Bibliometric Analysis of Fashion and Supply Chain Management Interface

    The convergence of fashion and supply chain management (SCM) has gained increasing scholarly attention in response to growing global concerns over agility, sustainability, and responsiveness in the fashion industry. This bibliometric analysis aims to systematically map the evolution of literature at the intersection of fashion-related products encompassing apparel, garments, textiles, and clothing and SCM practices within the business and management domain. Using the Scopus database and a rigorously defined search protocol, we extracted and analyzed peer-reviewed journal articles published in top-tier journals. Analytical tools such as Biblioshiny (R package) and VOSviewer were employed to assess publication trends, identify influential authors, institutions, and journals, and explore thematic clusters. Our findings reveal five dominant clusters: (1) Strategic and Structural Adaptation in Fashion SC; (2) Circular Economy and Sustainability Transitions in Fashion SC; (3) Optimization and Coordination in Fashion SC; (4) Digital and Circular Transformation in Sustainable Fashion SC and (5) Ethics, Entrepreneurship, and Green Innovation in Fashion SC. The study also highlights research gaps and proposes directions for future inquiry. This work offers precious insights for scholars and practitioners looking to understand how SCM concepts have shaped, and been shaped by, the evolving demands of the global fashion ecosystem.

  3. The Trajectory of Social Norms in Stock Management

    This study investigates the influence of social norms on stock management practices within sachet water production companies in the Western Region, integrating the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to analyze how subjective norms, specifically community expectations and cultural practices, shape behavioral intentions and operational decisions. Using a quantitative survey design, and structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze data from 520 respondents, the study revealed that community influence and cultural practices significantly enhance firms' responsiveness to demand fluctuations driven by social events, which in turn leads to increased stock management challenges such as overstocking or stockouts. However, these challenges prompt the adoption of mitigation strategies, which are found to have a strong positive effect on business outcomes, including sales volume and profitability. The measurement model demonstrated excellent reliability and validity, with Cronbach’s Alpha values ranging from 0.82 to 0.88 and AVE values above the threshold of 0.50. The structural model exhibited a good fit (?²/df = 2.14, CFI = 0.95, RMSEA = 0.05, SRMR = 0.04), supporting the robustness of the findings. Path analysis results showed large effect sizes for key relationships, particularly Mitigation Strategies -> Business Outcome (f² = 0.59), indicating that adaptive behaviors effectively translate norm-driven challenges into performance improvements. These findings underscore the critical role of social norms in shaping inventory decisions and highlight the importance of incorporating behavioral insights into supply chain training, planning tools, and incentive systems, particularly in culturally embedded and resource-constrained environments.

    Financial policy directly affects the availability and cost of a firm’s working capital which has significant impacts on the firm’s operations, profitability and risk. The capacity strategy also relies on the financing resources and is an integral part of the operations planning. This paper is the first research that examines the financial policy, capacity strategy, and operations planning in a holistic manner. We first develop an optimization model that integrates these three levels of decisions with the consideration of demand uncertainty and credit market risk. We also study the competition among firms who may use different financial policies and capacity strategies. In particular, we use the theory of variational inequality to model the equilibria of multiple competing firms under uncertain demand and credit conditions. We also provide numerical case studies which generate important managerial insights.

  5. Supply Chain Practices and Financial Performance: Evidence from Tadawul-Listed Manufacturing Firms in Saudi Arabia (2020-2025)

    This study examines the association between supply chain capabilities and firm-level Financial performance among Tadawul-listed manufacturing firms in Saudi Arabia. Drawing on the Resource-Based View and Dynamic Capabilities Theory, the study focuses on five capability dimensions: supply chain integration, complexity management, strategic alignment, IT-enabled process capability, and operational innovation. Firm-level capability measures were derived from survey data collected during 2024-2025 and linked to audited financial indicators, namely return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and return on sales (ROS), for the period 2020-2025. To address model saturation in annual regressions and improve statistical efficiency, the revised analysis employs pooled panel regression on firm-year observations, with specification choice guided by fixed-effects and random-effects testing and inference based on robust standard errors. The analysis places primary interpretive weight on the 2024-2025 period, where temporal alignment between capability measurement and financial outcomes is strongest, while earlier years are treated as retrospective association checks. The revised framework provides more credible evidence on how digital and innovation-oriented supply chain capabilities relate to audited financial performance in an emerging market context.

    The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation has made understanding the conditions for its effective adoption in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) operations an increasingly important and timely research priority. This study examines the economic, technological, social, and regulatory imperatives shaping the adoption of artificial intelligence in the operational activities of SMEs. The research focuses on Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) countries and selected former socialist bloc economies, using a combination of qualitative analysis and quantitative modeling. To strengthen the empirical analysis, a multi-year country-level dataset (2015–2024) is employed, allowing for a parsimonious regression approach. Two model specifications are estimated to examine the association between macro-level innovation indicators and technological readiness conditions. The results indicate that research and development expenditure represents the most robust and consistent factor associated with technological readiness, while entrepreneurial activity plays a complementary role. The findings suggest that national innovation environments shape the preconditions for AI adoption in SME operational and supply chain activities. The results are interpreted as exploratory evidence of macro-level patterns rather than predictive relationships. The study contributes to operations and supply chain management research by linking macro-level innovation conditions to the early stages of operational capability formation.

  7. Optimizing Agricultural Logistics Networks: Evidence from the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

    Agricultural supply chains (ASC) in the Mekong Delta face significant challenges in balancing economic efficiency, social development, and environmental sustainability. This study develops a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to optimize the citrus supply chain (CSC) by simultaneously minimizing total costs, maximizing employment, and reducing CO? emissions. The augmented ?-constraint method was applied to generate Pareto-optimal solutions and to identify trade-offs among competing objectives. The results indicate that within a predictable range, moderate increases in employment can be achieved with stable marginal costs and emissions. However, beyond a critical knee point, additional social benefits come at disproportionately high economic costs with limited environmental gains. The optimal trade-off solution was identified at v = 4.75, yielding a balanced outcome of 3,304.02 million VND in cost, 718 jobs, and 2,811.87 kg of CO? emissions. This research contributes to theory by extending multi-objective optimization in agri-food logistics, provides methodological insights through the use of the augmented ?-constraint approach, and offers practical implications for policymakers and managers in designing sustainable supply chain strategies in the Mekong Delta.

    In many countries, inland waterway transport could be integrated with land mode, making it more efficient and environmentally friendly. Indonesia has a vast river network, but it remains underutilized, with safety and sustainability concerns often being overlooked. Safety standards for ships operating on waterways have made limited progress, highlighting the need for comprehensive analysis. This study utilizes bibliometric data to examine trends in this area and support the MACTOR method, which helps policymakers select the most effective strategies for preventing accidents and ensuring that regulators and operators maintain safety and sustainability. This study provides insight into the implications of safe ship operation and explores collaboration among stakeholders to improve safety management and promote sustainable transportation systems. Data were collected through focus group discussions with 18 key actors, both directly and indirectly involved in inland waterway transport, followed by in-depth interviews with regulators and ship operators on safety regulations and their implementation. The study reveals that the actors’ engagement is not fully integrated, particularly in addressing issues related to ship operation management, ship condition, and traffic congestion. Therefore, a comprehensive and coordinated management approach is necessary to enhance the utilization of ships, a vital resource for most urban and rural communities.

    This study addresses the connections between Halal Business Model Innovation (HBMI), Market Orientation (MO), Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO), and Business Performance (BP) in Indonesian halal-certified food SMEs. Data were obtained from 173 SMEs through purposive sampling and analyzed within a quantitative cross-sectional framework, and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to conduct the analysis. The results reveal that EO significantly influences both MO and HBMI, while MO demonstrates a strong direct effect on BP. HBMI emerges as a notable direct predictor of Business Performance, underscoring its role in improving firm outcomes. HBMI does not serve as a primary mediator between strategic orientations and performance, whereas MO fully mediates the relationship between EO and BP. These findings imply that although HBMI directly enhances performance, its effectiveness as a transmission mechanism depends on further enabling factors. The study contributes to the body of literature on halal business strategies and provides actionable insights for SME managers and policymakers to reinforce orientation and innovation for greater competitiveness. Future comparative research across diverse national halal market contexts could employ these findings to validate and extend the results.

    Uncertainty approaches have been studied by many scholars. What makes them more interesting is the combination of a few approaches in order to make stronger and more flexible mathematical models. In this paper, we have proposed a robust flexible stochastic mathematical model which combines the robust optimization techniques, fuzzy soft constraint approach, and scenario-based stochastic approach. The created approach can provide a framework for better and simultaneous tackling different types of uncertainties in mathematical models. We have embedded the given general model into a bi-level supply chain problem, called location-inventory-routing problem. In this problem, we have considered a two-echelon supply chain consisting of some warehouses in the first echelon as leader and several retailers in the second echelon as follower. The supply chain tries to distribute a perishable item from the central warehouses to the retailers. The major uncertain parameters are demand of the retailers as well as some supply chain operational costs. The developed approach considers two different attitudes to uncertainty by the players in the game. We have employed the general fuzzy measures to implement the pessimistic-optimistic attitude of decision-makers. Furthermore, scenario-based robust programming techniques are utilized. A combination of fuzzy goal programming and multi-choice goal programming techniques are customized in order to solve the bi-level problem. A number of numerical samples with different sizes are solved and the results are analyzed. The results show that by increasing the pessimistic-optimistic attitude parameter of the leader, the leader's costs increases while by increasing the pessimistic-optimistic attitude parameter of the follower, the follower's total cost partially decreases.

    This study presents a quantitative overview of agricultural logistics, a sector that is vital to global food security yet constrained by fragmentation and the perishable nature of commodities. Drawing on a bibliometric analysis of 316 publications indexed in Scopus from 1989 to 2025 and processed with VOSviewer, the study maps the knowledge structure, identifies leading stakeholders, and traces emerging trends. The results indicate a sharp increase in scholarly output after 2019, signaling rising interest in efficiency optimization, sustainability, and the resilience of agri-food supply chains. China and the United States lead in research volume and collaboration networks. The analysis reveals six principal thematic clusters: infrastructure and system optimization; digitalization and the cold chain; sustainable logistics and biomass valorization; risk governance and the extended supply chain; cost efficiency and waste management; and warehouse automation. While foundational keywords such as “agricultural products” and “logistics” remain prevalent, emerging topics including cold chain logistics, big data, and electronic commerce exhibit increasing citation impact. The study provides a comprehensive landscape that enables scholars to pinpoint knowledge gaps for future inquiry and offers strategic implications for firms and policy makers.

    This study investigates the economic viability of independent workers in platform-based last-mile grocery delivery systems, focusing specifically on Instacart as a representative service supply chain. While prior research has examined operational efficiency, platform-level matching, scheduling, and service performance, less attention has been given to worker-level net income viability within the operational design and cost structures set by platforms. To address this gap, we develop a hybrid simulation framework integrating discrete-event simulation (DES) and system dynamics (SD). The DES model captures order processing, shopping, and delivery operations, while the SD model represents the accumulation of earnings and costs over time. Drawing on Expected Utility Theory and Distributive Justice Theory, we model worker decision-making under uncertainty and evaluate income fairness relative to effort and cost exposure. Using empirically grounded parameters, we analyze how batch structure, store characteristics, fuel costs, and tipping behavior affect hourly net income. Results reveal substantial earnings variability and highlight trade-offs between throughput efficiency and income stability. This study contributes by introducing a human-centered perspective on last-mile delivery, developing a hybrid simulation approach for platform-based supply chains, and providing insights for platform design and compensation policies.

    Enhancing the green investment (GI) behaviors and leveraging the synergies between enterprises at different value-chain (VC) positions are important guarantees for addressing climate risks and avoiding green overcapacity in developing country. Based on the sample includes 1918 Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies in China, this paper provides a specific analysis of the impact of VC position on GI. Further, it explores the formation mechanism of differentiated GI effects across different VC positions in terms of internal drivers and external conditions. Using one-way ANOVA and regression analysis, we reveal how the disparity in GI is shaped by key mechanism factors. Overall, the increase of VC position significantly promotes the enterprise GI. The differences of enterprise GI in different VC positions are influenced by factors such as the executive green cognition, the technological innovation ability, the non-controlling shareholders exit threat, and market competition. Specifically, enterprises in high VC positions have stronger GI due to stronger executive green cognition and technological innovation ability, and weaker exit threat and market competition than those of enterprises in low VC positions. Based on the above conclusions, this paper provides scientific suggestions on how to stimulate the willingness of GI and leverage the synergistic effects between enterprises at different VC positions.

  14. The Interplay between Power, Affective Trust, and Opportunism in Supply Chains: An Integrated View of Transaction Cost Economics and Social Exchange Theory

    This study investigates the relationship between supplier power, affective trust, and supplier opportunism in buyer-supplier relationships. Drawing on transaction cost economics (TCE) and social exchange theory (SET), we propose that different types of supplier power influence the affective trust that purchasing agents place in their supplier agents, and that affective trust, in turn, negatively impacts both weak-form and strong-form supplier opportunism. We employ regression-based mediation analysis using the PROCESS module in SmartPLS 4 to test our hypotheses with survey data gathered from 548 purchasing agents in Vietnam. Our findings reveal that referent and legitimate powers positively influence affective trust, whereas coercive power has a negative effect. Surprisingly, reward power had no significant effect on affective trust. Furthermore, affective trust negatively impacts strong-form opportunism but positively impacts weak-form opportunism. These findings have important implications for academics and practitioners in managing buyer-supplier relationships.

  15. The Role of Business Continuity Management in Supply Chain Resilience in Comparison between Manufacturing and Service Industries: Empirical Evidence from Thailand

    Business Continuity Management (BCM) plays a critical role in an era of uncertainty and crisis events. Supply Chain Resilience (SCRES) enables organizations to respond rapidly to disruptions. This study aimed to (1) examine the relationship between BCM and SCRES, (2) compare the structural and contextual differences between manufacturing and service sectors in terms of crisis responses, and (3) validate the proposed BCM–SCRES model with real-world business operations in the manufacturing and service industries. A mixed-methods approach was applied in this study. For the quantitative study, data were gathered from 434 organizations across the manufacturing and service sectors. The data were then analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The proposed model was subsequently validated through in-depth interviews involving three business cases. The findings revealed that BCM had a direct and significant impact on SCRES. When comparing the role of BCM in SCRES between manufacturing and service industries, the Recovery Plan (RP) emerged as the most critical component, followed by Crisis Management (CM) in both sectors. For the manufacturing industry, the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) placed third in importance, whereas it held fourth place in the service industry. Conversely, Emergency Management (EM) had the lowest influence in the manufacturing sector but held greater significance in the service sector, where it ranked third. Qualitative validation confirms that these relationships are reflected in organizational practices. These findings not only enhance the long-term recovery capacity of these sectors but also strengthen the sustainable international competitiveness of Thailand’s manufacturing and service industries.
